Installing Bot to Teams

Explains adding your Teams bot to a Teams app in the Developer Portal and installing it in Microsoft Teams. Useful for making the bot available in personal chats, group chats, and team channels.

# Overview

A bot can't be added to Teams on its own. It has to be part of a Teams app. In this guide you create a Teams app in the Developer Portal, add the bot you created to it, and install the app in Teams.

Make sure you've created your Stubber profile first, so that messages sent to the bot reach Stubber.

# Create a Teams app

Open https://dev.teams.microsoft.com/apps and click New app. Give the app a name. This is the name people see in Teams.

# Basic information

Under Configure > Basic information, fill in the required fields (short and long description, developer name, website, privacy policy and terms of use URLs) and click Save. Teams won't install an app with missing required fields.

You can set the app icon under Configure > Branding.

# Add the bot to the app

Go to Configure > App features and select Bot.

Set up the bot feature:

• Identify your bot: choose Select an existing bot and pick the bot you created for your Stubber profile.
• What can your bot do?: check Upload and download files if people should be able to send files to Stubber.
• Select the scopes where people can use your bot:
  • Personal: direct (1:1) chats with the bot
  • Team: channels in a team
  • Group chat: group chats the bot is added to

Click Save.

# Install the app in Teams

Pick one of the options below. The buttons are at the top right of the app page in the Developer Portal.

# Preview in Teams (testing)

Click Preview in Teams to install the app for yourself straight away. Use this to test the bot before you roll it out to your organisation. Your Teams admin must allow custom app uploads.

# Make it available to your organisation

Click Distribute to see the distribution options.

• Download the app package: downloads a .zip app package that a Teams admin can upload (see below).
• Publish to your organisation: sends a request to your Teams admin. Once it's approved, the app appears under Built for your organisation in the Teams app store.

To upload a downloaded app package as a Teams admin, go to the Teams Admin Center at https://admin.teams.microsoft.com/policies/manage-apps, choose Actions > Upload new app, and select the .zip file.

# Add the bot to a chat or team

In Teams, go to Apps > Built for your organisation and select your app.

Click Open to chat with the bot directly, or choose a channel or chat to add the bot to and click Go.

# Chatting with the bot

Messages in a direct chat with the bot are sent to Stubber.

In team channels and group chats, the bot only receives messages that @mention it.

The first message the bot receives links your Microsoft tenant to the Stubber profile.
